Zoom facing class action litigation over privacy violation claims

Most people in Florida and across the country value their privacy. They may provide personal information to other people or entities for a specific purpose, but in some cases, individuals may feel that those people or entities did not protect their information. As a result, class action litigation could result.

It was recently reported that Zoom Video Communications is facing a class action lawsuit due to allegedly disclosing users' information to third parties. Individuals can use Zoom to make video conference calls, which more people have been doing lately. However, the company purportedly collects data and information from users when they download the iOS app and then provides that information to outside parties like Facebook and others. As a result, users feel that their privacy has been invaded.

The lawsuit claims that the company did not state that users' data would be disclosed to third parties. Even if users do not have a Facebook account, their information was still allegedly sent to the social media company. The report did indicate that Zoom updated the iOS app so that user data would no longer be sent to Facebook. It was unclear what damages were being sought by members of the class.

Privacy is a major issue for clients and customers of any business, and if Florida companies face claims that they violated people's privacy, serious issues could result. As this case shows, class action litigation could stem from such an issue. Of course, companies have the right to defend against such accusations, and gaining information on their options may help them address claims.
